Tutorial: Valentine Message Pillows

It is Day 8 and the final HeARTfest! Valentine Tutorial.

This is a 2 for 1 post of instructions for making several
unique and custom message pillows.

1. Cut one piece of fabric approximately 8" x 6".
Paint one side with Valspar Chalkboard Paint (found at Lowe's Hardware)

2. When the paint is dry, fold a 0.5" edge on all sides
and stitch in place to keep the fabric from unraveling.
Also. trim the corners at a diagonal to keep excess
fabric from showing. Be careful not to cut any stitches.

3. Cut two larger pieces of fabric approximately 14" x 10".

4. Stitch the painted chalkboard fabric (black side
up) to the right side of one of the larger fabric pieces.
Position the painted fabric vertically 2.5" from the
bottom and centered horizontally on the larger fabric.

5. Place the two right sides of the larger fabric pieces
together and stitch. Remember to leave an opening to
turn the fabric and for stuffing the pillow with batting.
Once the pillow is stuffed, sew the opening shut.

6. Write your message on the pocket with
chalk and clean with water.

The second message pillow is a tutorial I have shared
before but is Perfect for any occasion!

1. Cut two pieces of fabric approximately 13" x 13".
Paint one side of one of the pieces of fabric with
white acrylic paint.

2. When the paint is dry, use a red and blue sharpie
marker to draw lines across the white area of the
fabric mimicking the look of a piece of notebook
paper.

3. Select a favorite verse of poetry or special message
and use a pencil to carefully write out the words on the
blue lines. If you make a mistake then erase the pencil
marks and start again. Once written, use a black sharpie
marker to trace over the pencil marks.

4. Place the two right sides of the fabric pieces together
and stitch. Remember to leave an opening to turn the
fabric and for stuffing the pillow with batting. Once the
pillow is stuffed, sew the opening shut.

Journaling The Garden Week 4

Last week, I shared the first page spread from
my Garden Journal. But I had leapt ahead of
myself and returned to my Journal this week
feeling like I had completely ignored this lone
page at the beginning of the book.

So, I decided to remedy this by creating an ode
to both the past and the present. There are
beautiful brambles of holly that line the west
side of my home. Evergreen with tiny red jewels
tucked in among the branches.

The background burnished with metallic gold rub-on and
reflective rice paper.

Also, a little treasure I discovered at the office supply
store to help me document each page with a date.

Tutorial: A Valentine Sentiment and MORE EXCITING HOLIDAY PROJECTS!!!

With Valentines just around the corner,
I wanted to share a favorite Tutorial for
creating very unique and beautiful
sentiments to give.

1. White wash the postcard using a paint brush
and several coats of white acrylic paint

2. Place muslin fabric over a copy paper butterfly
image. Using a mechanical pencil trace the butterfly
outline and any large details onto the fabric.

3. Paint the butterfly outline on fabric using
a #3 round paintbrush and the appropriate
colors of acrylic paint.

4. One the painted fabric is dry, cut the
butterfly out using small embroidery scissors

5. Layer a silk fabric square on the vintage
postcard, along with lace, a rice paper heart,
and the painted butterfly on top.

6. Sew the silk fabric, lace, rice paper heart
and butterfly to the postcard

7. Add your heartfelt message to the remaining
white-washed area of the postcard.

In September 2010, my mother-in-law, Marylin and I
had the privilege of teaching in Orvieto, Italy at an event
organized by Adventures in Italy (hosts-Bill & Kristin Steiner).

After arriving in Rome, we road the train to a small city
located high upon a plateau that completely captivated
our hearts. As it appeared on the horizon, we were
instantly awe-inspired by its beauty. Orvieto transported
us back thousands of years. Every street, every building
was a tribute to an ancient past, and a people that loved
their heritage. Not only did Bill and Kristin greet us with
the open arms of friendship, but also every person we
met along our journey did the same. Smiles accompanied
Italian greetings sprinkled with broken English, as natives
aided us in experiencing their town.

Passing through the enormous gates of Instituto San Lodovico
convent, our home away from home, invoked a peace beyond
measure. It was as if we were entering heaven, and this feeling
of tranquility continued throughout our stay. Each day, we
spent mornings in a light-filled studio creating, and afternoons
touring the city streets, as well as the surrounding lands. Our
hosts planned activities every day that included cooking with
a famous chef, visiting a vineyard, shopping at the open
market, seeing the magnificent cathedral, picnicking, and of
course, eating the fabulous cuisine.

We are so honored to be invited to teach again in Orvieto in
mid-September 2012. Going to Italy was a dream we never
thought possible. Now to think of returning is beyond exciting,
and we would love to have you join us!

We are taking only a very, very small group, so as to create an
intimate atmosphere that is both personal, and rewarding. And
we truly want to make sure each and every person gets as much
personal assistance and attention through every step.

Journaling The Garden Week 3

It is a bone chilling cold today, much colder than
previous days, with bouts of snow flurries rushing
past the window. Such tiny flakes that are almost to
small to even notice.

I am excited to share my nearly completed, first page
spread in the Garden Journal. All that remains is to
gather my thoughts on paper to add to this remembrance.

The now daily visits from several Blue Jays was a
perfect subject choice for the snowy background
created.

These winged lovelies are painted on muslin fabric
with acrylic paints. Here is a tutorial link so you to
can create your own painted subjects.

Once the paintings were dry, I browsed through
my collection of vintage letters and documents
to find some appropriate collage materials.

Both the paper and painted elements were
attached to the page using my favorite glue
Golden's Heavy Gel Matte Medium, which dries
completely clear.

Tutorial: Chalkboard Tags

I absolutely LOVE this project and am so excited to share
a tutorial with you!

Lately, I have been doing a bit of deep cleaning in my
studio, and I needed a way to mark various bins and
boxes. So I thought I would make some super easy
chalkboard tags to help me organize my supplies.

1. Start with a quart of Valspar Chalkboard Paint.

*Valspar paint can be found at Lowe's Hardware

2. Next gather several plain Shipping Tags that
can be purchased from an Office Supply Store.

3. Remove the string from the Shipping Tag
and gently peel off the top layer of the hole
protector.

4. Using a Sponge Brush coat the Shipping Tag
with two layers of Chalkboard Paint.

*The shipping tag curls when painted but
flattens out after the paint has dried

5. After the Shipping Tag is thoroughly dry,
apply a thick third coat of Chalkboard Paint.

6. Once the final coat is completely dry, re-tie
the string onto the Shipping Tag and glue the
peeled layer from the hole protector back in place.

Now, the Chalkboard Tag is ready to use and reuse!

Artfest 2012 - A Final Farewell!

One of the best ways to grow as an artist is by taking a class.
Workshops provide opportunities to hone a particular skill,
try something new or simply explore.

They are also excellent opportunities to connect with others
sharing a similar interest and build friendships, a community
of like minds, like hearts.

Artfest is without a doubt one of the very best artistic
experiences anyone could have. After thirteen years of
hosting this incredible retreat, coordinators, Teesha and
Tracy Moore have decided to bring the fairytale to an end.

For me, Artfest has been truly life altering. I am forever
changed, in profound ways as I gathered year after year
to be part of this event.

Artfest was my, first ever, art retreat, and for many years I
reveled in the role of student. Slowly I began to spread my
artistic wings and gathered my courage to try my hand at
selling my art at vendor night, which lead to the next brave
step of teaching a workshop.

Teesha gave me all these first time opportunities, which
built my confidence and guided me to other, BIGGER
happenings in my life. I know, without a doubt, I would
not be where I am today without Artfest.

Although it is the end of an era, I am thrilled beyond measure
to be teaching for another year, the final year.

In fact, I would like to extend a personal invitation to come
participate in several fun and unique classes I am giving
that are perfect for a first time attendee or veteran Artfester.

I am especially proud of this workshops as they provide
valuable insight and training in the areas of sketching,
drawing, painting, sculpture, journaling, design and
mixed-media that can be applied to future projects.

Thursday, March 29: Technicolor Journaling -
Experience an art journaling color explosion by rendering
subjects using intense, high chroma, deeply saturated art
sticks.

Saturday, March 31: The Curiosities Within -
Much like a Cabinet of Curiosities, we will create and assemble
a fascinating collection of possible found objects from nature
and explore the idea of sculpture through the manipulation of
paper into three-dimensional works of art. Each piece is displayed
in exhibition format/style and stored in a uniquely weathered box.

Journaling The Garden Week 2

With a journal selected and pages prepped,
I am ready to begin recording my unique
garden experiences.

To jump-start my creativity, I made a list of
seasonal subjects to help narrow my focus.

Below is a list of prompts I brainstormed...

Winter:
-weather: snow, ice, snowflakes, cold temperatures,
cloudy
- foliage: leafless trees, bare branches, decaying leaves,
pinecones, evergreens, holly, winter berries, poinsettia,
papewhites, amaryllis
- wildlife: deer, seasonal birds (junos, red-bellied
woodpecker, bluejays, cardinals, house finches, starlings,
canadian geese, goldfinches, downy woodpecker,
tufted tit-mouse), possum
- colors: To help identify a winter color palette,
I made a trip to the hardware store to gather paint
swatches, seen in the image at the top.

I also found various texture swatches that were interesting
and could be another good background alternative.

These swatches were made with paint and coarse colored
bits of sand.

These texture swatches are created using a colored
venetian plaster applied in varying directions.

I also stopped by my local craft store to look for
stencils or other products, such as die-cut scrapbook
papers, that could be used as a stencil.

This is a Martha Stewart brand, felt ribbon cut in the
shape of snowflakes. PERFECT! to use for my first
background.

After consulting the color swatches, I picked an
appropriate acrylic paint and use the Snowflake
felt ribbon to make a wintery background on the
first page spread.

Then to add that extra little sparkle, spritzed
the page with hairspray, as a glue alternative,
and while wet dusted iridescent glitter.

Now it looks like a Winter Wonderland!

Journaling The Garden Week 1

Welcome!! WELCOME!!!... to the first post of a new, year-long
blog series: Journaling The Garden.

Each week, I plan to share a mix of art journaling tips, techniques,
prompts, tutorials, and finished pages, as I record my experiences
communing with nature.

I am very excited about this endeavor, as it is something I have been
pondering and longing to do for several years now. I hope you will
follow along on this adventure, perhaps even participate by starting
your own nature journal.

So when starting any sort of journaling project, the first decision is
selecting a book. There are lots and lots of choices, which can be
somewhat confusing because each has its own merits. Choosing a
journal depends both on personal tastes, and how you plan to use it.

Because of my affinity for vintage documents and handwriting,
I decided to use an antique ledger book. I have a collection of
ledgers, shown at the top, in varying sizes but was immediately
drawn to one particular book, shown above, as it was in good
condition with many pages of beautiful writing.

Although there was no significant damage to the binding or
structure of the book the inside cover page was torn, so I
simply applied hinge tape, (a product I had readily available)
to prevent the tear from becoming larger and give the torn
page strength.

However after applying the hinge tape, I think I would have
preferred using something that looked and felt more like
fabric, such as linen tape, mostly because linen tape has
such a nice texture. But the hinge tape worked fine, plus
saved me time and money.

Working with a journal that already has writing is one way
I help myself overcome the fear of beginning with a blank
page. Although I adore the handwriting present, I want it
to be a much more subtle part of the background.

So I elected to cover up some of the writing by prepping
the page surface.

There are many product available for preparing paper. I used
Gesso as an undercoating and Golden's Absorbent Ground for
over the dried layer of Gesso. The Absorbent Ground when
applied on top creates a porous surface that allows for wash
and staining effects.

These additional layers will also help seal the vintage paper
and provide some additional strength to the more fragile
pages.

The application of Gesso and Absorbent Ground is sparse
around the edges of the page so the handwriting can still
be seen.

I only prepped the first 24 pages, as I had to give each one
time to dry before moving to the next. I intend to prep more
pages, as I move along through the year.

The New Year!

Dear Friends... Here we are, once again, standing on the threshold.

Although each day affords us a fresh start, January 1st is accepted
by most as a time to reflect on moments past and imagine possibilities
for the future.

As we begin anew, I am anxious for 2012 and the unfolding of some
really wonderful happenings, exciting opportunities, and the renewed
commitment to creating nature inspired art.

In 2012, I will once again be working closely with the very talented staff
of Windham Fabrics/Baum Textiles designing new patterns, along
with promoting my endearing second collection, Garden Tales. (Find
these new fabrics in your local quilting stores mid-January
and in my on-line store in late-February)

I am also excited to be working with TF Publishing again on a 2013
Nature Inspired Birds Calendar line, as a follow-up to the very popular
2012 Birds Calendars.

On the horizon are new retail projects with several other companies,
those details I hope to share with you later this year.

However due to the previously mentioned licensing commitments, I
have only accepted three invitations to teach next year. But never fear,
I have some really GREAT workshops scheduled in the coming months.
So, be sure to check out class details under Workshops (located on the
right sidebar) and consider joining me in Washington, California,
and Italy.

And starting January 2nd, I will be embarking on a year-long blog
series: Journaling The Garden (In Vintage Mixed Media Style).

Each week, I will share a mix of art journaling tips, techniques,
prompts, tutorials, and finished pages, as I record my experiences
communing with nature. I am quite captivated by this endeavor
as it is something I have been longing to do for several years now.
So, I hope you will plan to follow along onthis adventure, perhaps
even participate by starting your own nature journal.

Tutorial: A Last Minute Gift... That's Personalized!

Looking for a last minute gift? How about making one that's personalized!

Create a message pillow...

Tutorial: Budget Friendly Gifts of Nature

I enjoy giving a gift of nature at the holidays
but most floral arrangements can be a real
budget buster.

Here is a tutorial for creating a wallet friendly,
inspired by nature present that is sure to be a
wonderful surprise.

1. Start by making a visit to your local
hardware store. The garden center is
a great place to find very fragrant
seasonal plants.

* I found this rosemary topiary
for only $1.50

2. After selecting the plant, make
a visit to your local fabric store to
purchase some yardage of decorative
material. The amount of fabric needed
will be roughly three times the size of
the plant's pot.

* I am using burlap in this example
because of its rich texture and natural
rustic appearance.

3. Gather the decorative fabric around
the base of the plant making sure to
cover the entire pot.

4. Secure the gathered fabric with twine
or string. Tucking the excess fabric under
the twine to create a pleasing ruffled look
at the top of the pot.

5. Consider adding a coordinating ribbon
around the twine.

6. As a finishing touch add an extra bit of
sparkle with a glittery ornament.

Cut a star from heavy card stock.

7. Spread glue to one side of the card stock
star and sprinkle a coating of glitter while wet.

8. Once dry, tie the glittered star to the
ribbon.

Tutorial: Gift Tags

I love creating custom tags for my holiday gifts.
Using remnant wrapping paper adorned with
natural bits, you, too, can make the perfect
accessory for any present.

1. Start with plain Shipping Tags that can be
purchased from an Office Supply Store.

2. Glue the Shipping Tag to a remnant piece
of wrapping paper, cutting away any excess.

3. Gather various natural elements from
your outside surrounding.

Remember worn and weathered elements
are extremely beautiful and full of character!

4. Using aerosol hairspray lightly spritz the
gathered bits of nature and sprinkle with a
coating of fine iridescent glitter while wet.

5. Select coordinating ribbon or twine and
other decorative components like burlap
or buttons to use in the background.

6. Arrange and glue a glittery nature element
with various other decorative components to
each wrapping paper gift tag.

7. Attach beautifully decorated tags to presents.

Holiday Happenings... Part 2

This week has been all about finishing projects, such
as wrapping presents, gathering the ingredients for
Christmas Day dinner, making holiday treats, and
printing holiday cards, along with preparing each
one for the post.

It has been a tradition for me to make the artwork
that adorns our holiday greeting for nearly 10 years
now. A task I enjoy since I love having any excuse to
create.

Each year, I look toward my experiences with nature to
guide me in selecting a main subject for the work. And
this year with the addition of 4, sometimes 5, different
bird feeders located just outside my kitchen windows, I
had an abundance of subjects to inspire me.

However, it was not until two weeks ago that I made the
final decision on which subject to paint, when I spied the
happenings of two little Tufted Titmice on the tray feeder,
with one of them sweetly nudging a large shelled peanut
toward the second with its beak.

Such a loving act, and definitely a moment to remember.

So this holiday, a charming little Tufted Titmouse carries
our message of love and remembrance to family and friends
both far and near.

Today I am thrilled to share an interview
with my friend and fellow artist Janet Clare!

I had the pleasure of meeting Janet over two
years ago when I taught at The Festival Of
Quilts in Birmingham, England.

From the moment I entered Janet's vendor
booth, I was captivated by her art. Her work
is extremely charming, whimsical, and so
endearing. I feel lucky to say that Janet and
I became fast friends and have continued to
stay in touch.

And, I am pleased to announce that Janet has

1. So Janet, what is your story? I want to know everything
about your journey to successful artist, and author.

I have always been creative and can’t remember a time
when I wasn’t in the middle of a project of some sort or
another. My parents were very encouraging and are
creative people themselves, so making things is as natural
and easy as breathing.

I went to art school and got a textiles and fashion degree
and then went on to be a freelance knitwear designer,
working with an agent in London. Then I had our boys
and became a stay at home Mum who sewed and knitted
and drew to keep herself sane and happy!

Once the boys were at nursery school I discovered blogs,
and asked Tony to make me a blog and the rest just followed.
I am my own boss, I don’t worry about pleasing anyone else-
I make only what I like and want to make. I consider myself
very fortunate that others seem to like it too!

2. What kinds of things inspire you? What motivates you to make art?

I love to look at vintage quilts, folk art, children’s drawings,
old photographs and to look round museums. I love nature
too and am always writing phrases and snippets of poems
down that catch my imagination. I keep a scrapbook and
sketchbooks. I can’t imagine not creating- I am always
creating something, somewhere. I can’t even dust a shelf
without re-arranging the contents to make a little still life.

I am a visual, creative person and always have been. I need
to make things. I think best with a pencil in my hand.

3. What do you enjoy most about the creative process?

Creating something that didn’t exist a few hours ago is a
wonderful feeling. I am a true designer, so the design
process of choosing colours and fabrics and problem
solving is the most enjoyable part for me.

I love feeling inspired.

4. I know you have a busy schedule with family, making art, teaching.
How do you manage your projects and organize your creative schedule?
Do you have any tips for staying on top of things?

My Mum is Irish and they say you have ‘your two arms
the one length’ when you are being lazy and not doing
anything- this is very frowned upon. So I never have my
two arms the one length! I’m not sure I am on top of
things, so wouldn’t like to give any advice about that, but
somehow keeping busy and loving the work you do seems
to get you through almost anything.

If I have a deadline looming I can always give up sleeping!
Other than that I try to turn off the computer and just start
sewing or drawing until I get immersed in whatever it is I
am working on and then I find it hard to stop. I often have
to set an alarm clock to remind me to get the boys home
from school!

I’m also quite good a turning a blind eye to the dust and
chores- they will always wait for you but your inspiration
never ever does.

5. Your new book, Freya & Fred, is so charming, can you
tell us a little about it and the process of writing and creating
for it?

Thank you! Freya and Fred was inspired by the paper dolls and
their clothes I used to play with when I was little. I created a girl
and her wardrobe of clothes and then imagined a week in her life.

For example, on Monday Freya goes to school and so I designed
an alphabet quilt and a book bag for her. I always start a project
with a mood or ideas board and keep a sketchbook for every
project too. The first thing I designed and made for my book
was the front cover. My friend Hayley is a graphic designer and
she made a wonderful job of laying out all the pages for me and
my lovely Tony helped me with all the technical bits and bobs.

I haven’t a technical bone in my body. We all worked round the
clock for a few weeks to get the book to the printers on time.
Then we all went out and had margaritas to celebrate!

6. What is something people might not know about you?

Many, many things- I’m quite shy really. But, I don’t believe in
keeping things for best- if you’ve got it, use it!

I’ve got no sense of direction. I can’t park the car.

I can make a really good sticky ginger cake.

I always have cold feet and my favourite place is the beach in
winter (which doesn’t help the cold feet situation!)

7. What are you working on right now? Do you have any upcoming projects?

I am working on my second book at the moment. It will be
ready for the Festival of Quilts, NEC in August and will have
an English coastal theme. I think it will be called ‘Good Old
Blighty’, or maybe ‘Hearty Good Wishes’ I haven’t quite
decided yet.

I am also daydreaming about designing a fabric collection.

of Art’, England and specialised in children’s knitwear design.

BlueJay ADORATION/OBSESSION!

Since early summer when I added a tray style bird
feeder as an additional feeding option in my garden,
I have been sort-of, well....obsessed! for lack of a
better description, with attracting BlueJays.

A tray feeder is a good way of luring a number of
bird species to your yard. And although it has been
very successful in bringing a great many more birds
to visit, which has had me completely overjoyed,
there hasn't been a BlueJay in sight.

So... What to do?... What to do?

I decided to consult with my local store owner where
I purchase my bird food supplies, and have been
following his recommendations by having both shell
peanuts and no shell peanuts available.

FINALLY! my perseverance paid off.

As days with cold temperatures arrived, one lone BlueJay
started making a few visits. The first time I saw him I
honestly thought I was simply manifesting the image in
my own mind. But now on really chilly days, my BlueJay
has, again and again, made fleeting appearances at the
feeder.

I can't adequately explain what a thrilling experience it
is to see him. He is so majestic and large. In fact, he is the
biggest BlueJay I have ever seen. Until recently, I was
never quick enough to snap a picture of him, but once
again, my patience was rewarded with capturing just a
few images to share.

Tutorial: Leaves of Thankfulness

Here in America, we will be celebrating
Thanksgiving on Thursday. Most stories of
Thanksgiving history start with the harvest
celebration of the Pilgrims and the Indians
that took place in the Autumn of 1621.

Through the years, this tradition continues
as a day for families and friends to gather,
spending time together, with each person
reflecting on their blessings both big and
small.

Although colorful leaves are much scarcer
than in years past, the inspiration from
the few remnants of a fading season have
me gathering my creative tools to help
capture the spirit of the upcoming holiday.

1. Select a fallen leaf. Choose one that is
in good condition and mostly dry.

2. Using a pencil and a piece of heavy card-stock,
trace the outline of the leaf. Cut out the tracing.

3. Select additional pieces of heavy card-stock in
autumn colors. Use the leaf template to trace an
outline on to the colored papers.

4. Cut the traced leaves from the color papers.

5. Finally, place one leaf or several and a pen
or pencil at each place at the table. Then ask
dinner guests to write what they are thankful for,
have them share their heartfelt sentiments before
the meal.

In The Studio... Feathers

Adding to my Cabinet of Curiosities, feather
findings.

Fragile treasures left behind from what looked
to be a terrible struggle. And I could not help
but shed some tears as I gathered this collection
of various feathers strewn about the garden.

I suppose in life not all gifts are given freely or
without struggle. Yet, I am comforted that these
beautiful remains will live on, if only as inspiration
for this humble artist.

Simplicities

There is just something about the simple
pleasure of the first falling snow. The
heart leaps with joy to see tiny flakes
drifting, tumbling, and twirling about
in the brisk north wind.

I am feeling better today and want to
thank everyone for the well wishes received
both in comments made and private messages.

Hoping to be back in the studio tomorrow,
enjoying the simple pleasure of a familiar
routine.

Peaceful Findings

yet in the company of leaf and flower,
grass and sky is tranquility realized."

These days there is a deep longing for solitude
and healing resonating from within, as I am on
the mend after an unwelcome trip to the doctor.
During this recovery my thoughts have been
drifting more and more toward the upcoming
Thanksgiving holiday, which seems almost
forgotten in the already hub-bub of Christmas
everywhere.

Tutorial: A Christmas Cardinal Ornament

Welcome! It's day three of the ArtSpark Winter Tutorial
Blog Roll...

Today, I am sharing instructions for creating a delightful
Christmas Cardinal Ornament to decorate your tree, a
package, or perhaps, give as a gift to someone special.

1. Cut a piece of 200 thread count bleached muslin
fabric approximate 2"x2". Using a color photocopy
of a Cardinal's head, trace the outline onto the fabric
with a mechanical pencil and a light box.

2. Following the basic painting steps in my Acrylic
Painting Tutorial, break the Cardinal down into several
main colors and started by painting those large color
blocks using a dry brush technique.

In this example I had two colors: a medium red and black.

3. Once the paint is dry, layer other dark and light paint
colors to create the shadows and highlights using a
wash technique.

Allowing each wash to dry thoroughly, continue adding
more layers of paint until satisfied.

4. Cut one piece of decorative fabric as a background
approximately 3"x3". Cut two pieces of Steam-A-Seam2
the first approximately 2"x2" and the second approximately
3"x3".

5. Iron the 3"x3" decorative fabric to a second piece
of decorative fabric approximately 5"x5" sandwiching
the 3"x3" piece of Steam-A-Seam2 between the two.

Iron the 2"x2" painted Cardinal fabric to the 3"x3"
piece of decorative fabric sandwichings the 2"x2"
piece of Steam-A-Seam2 between the two.

6. Cut a third piece of decorative fabric approximately
5"x5". (I liked to use the same design as the 5"x5"
fabric used in step #5)

Placing right sides together, stitch the two pieces of
5"x5" fabric together remembering to sandwich a piece
of ribbon between the two layers as the ornaments
hanger. Also remember to leave a small opening for
turning the fabric.

7. Add batting or stuffing, then stitch the ornament
closed. Consider adding additional decorative stitching
around the edges to create more visual interest.

International Quilt In Review

I am home now from attending the International
Quilt Market and Festival in Houston. Once again,
like last year, it was a whirlwind of experiences
beginning with Market where my second fabric
collection, Garden Tales, debuted in the Windham
Fabrics booth, to teaching 6 workshops sharing
techniques with 100+ students total, as well as
demonstrating in 3 different samplers.

I was so pleased with the turn out at the Garden
Tales Meet and Greet, having the opportunity to
talk with customers about these beautiful fabrics
and feeling that rush of excitement when we handed
out over +50 Limited Edition Prints in less than 20
minutes.

As always, the quilt exhibits were exquisite. Displays
of breath-taking inspiration stretched out as far as
the eye could see. Unfortunately, I did not have the
opportunity to see each work, but did manage to take
in most of the show, snapping pictures of a few favorites.

Remnants and Remains

I am traveling home today from an exciting
week at International Quilt. I look forward
to sharing highlights from the event in my
next post.

As I gaze out my car windows seeing the
Kansas landscape race by, I try desperately
to commit to memory the details of this
waning Autumn season.

Time seems harder and harder to hang on
to as the years pass, and all that's left are
the remnants and remains of a memory to
cherish, to hold close.

My love affair with Pansies started many years ago,
back in art school. The artwork above is one of my
very first explorations marrying a watercolor painted
subject with a collage background.

On a recent trip to a favorite nursery, I was captivated
by their variety of beautiful flowers, so I returned the
next day to take pictures as a reference and to share.

How beautiful they are!

Than all the summer store,

Channeling Ruth Rae

On Monday, October 31st and Tuesday, November 1st,
Mom-in-law, Marylin Huskamp, and I will be teaching
two workshops at International Quilt Festival, Houston
by Ruth Rae.

Due to illness, Ruth is unable to attend, so we are
stepping-in to insure that Ruth's techniques can still
be shared with eager students.

The first workshop is an Exploration Into Mixed Media
(#119 in the Class Catalog). We will be altering fabrics
and paper with resin, paint, and pens. Learning to
incorporate machine and hand sewing onto a multi-
surface art quilt. Above is a sample artwork, Marylin
made to show participants.

The second workshop is Velvet and Lace Jewelry
(#232 in the Class Catalog). Using machine stitching,
bead crochet, and wire techniques, we will incorporate
ribbons and fabrics to create a versatile "statement"
jewelry piece. Below is the sample bracelet/necklace
with a display pillow I created to share with students.

There are still spaces available in both classes. If
you are attending Festival, we hope you will consider

Nifty Gifty!

Thanks to the lovely Lyric Kinard and her outstanding new DVD,
Bead It Like You Mean It, over the last several weeks I have been
having wonderful fun trying out all sorts of nifty beading techniques.

In The Studio... Petals

Recent days are the coldest yet of the
Autumn season. Blustery winds rocking
everything about, determined to unhinge
the clinging blossom from the vine and
leaf from it's limb.

Sad, I am to see such beauty swept away.

I did collect several petals from the garden.
Too lovely to simply allow them to be
discarded without a remembrance for
me to gaze upon when the snow flies.

The Painted Rose Tutorial

Since Roses have filled my life with such
inspiration lately, I thought it might be
lovely to share a painting tutorial so all
of you, could join in the creative fun.

I snapped this photograph of a flower from
my garden, and printed the image on a sheet
of copy paper.

Flowers are really all about capturing the
shape of a petal and distinguishing one
from another by emphasizing the dark,
shadowy areas and the highlighted areas.

Using an ink pen, I outlined each petal so
I could easily distinguish the shape of the
rose.

Using a piece of bleach muslin 200 thread ct.,
I traced the inked outline onto the fabric with
a mechanical pencil and a light box.

Following the basic painting steps in the
Watercolor Effects Tutorial, I broke
the subject down into several main colors
and started by painting those large color
blocks using a dry brush technique.

In this example I had four colors: light pink,
medium/hot pink, red, and medium green

Once the paint was dry, I began layering
other dark and light paint colors to create
the shadows and highlights using a wash
technique.

Allowing each wash to dry thoroughly,
I continued adding more layers of paint
until satisfied.

Finally, I cut the painted rose from the
surrounding muslin fabric and collaged
it onto a background of vintage papers.

Inspirations...

Years ago, as a new home owner, I had many
a grand scheme and big dream of starting a
garden of my very own. A place filled with all
sorts of flowers growing wild, much like the
beautiful English gardens always shown in
magazines. I envisioned my hard labor being
richly compensated with a parade of continuous
blossoms ready for the picking at a moments
notice.

These were the ideals of a novice gardener. As
many of you read this and chuckle a little at
my grandiose plan, I am sure you sympathize
and probably understand all too well, some
similar feelings.

In those beginning months and years of my
garden, I carefully tended and toiled, waiting
patiently for new plants to become strong. I
won some battles with pesky diseases, weather
or wildlife, and others were lost.

Today, I am proud to say that I have a lovely
garden with areas still in the nurturing phase
and others... rewarding me with wonderful
blooms as both decoration and inspiration.

Watercolor Effects Tutorial

When I was in art school, I concentrated on creating
with watercolors. The look of watercolors is what
really had me hooked from the very beginning,
building-up layer upon layer of thin paint to achieve
the intense presence of color, yet with that light-as-
feather, ethereal essence.

Acrylic paint was something I did not begin exploring
until I decided to paint on fabric. At the time there
was no way to use watercolor paints to achieve any
sort of color that would last on fabric... so off I went
in a different art medium direction.

Today, acrylics are my paint of choice and I have learned
how to achieve the same watercolor-esque feel that I
love so much. I thought I would share my simple techniques
for creating this watercolor look using acrylics.

Before you begin applying paint, break the subject
down into several main colors. Start by painting those
large color blocks using a dry brush which is a
technique using a paint brush that is relatively
dry and dipped in paint straight from the package
or no water added.

Once dry, select accent colors to use as details. Details
help define and give the subject a three dimensional look.
These details can be achieved using a wash which
is a painting technique where small amounts of water are
added.

In the image above, one drop of water from the paint brush
was added to brown. Two drops of water were added to the
teal blue and four drops of water added to the lime green.

The more water added to paint the more soupy or runny it
will become and the more transparent it will dry.

Once a wash of color is applied and dry, you might
find the results are barely noticeable. In this instance
multiple layers of the paint wash, one on top of another,
help strengthen the intensity of the color.

Always allow each layer of paint to dry before
adding more of the same color wash or perhaps
a new/different color wash.

Because the washes of color are semi-transparent,
this allows multiple layers, even the first dry brushed
color to be seen creating depth and dimension in your
subject.

mind why Lyric received an award for
teaching. Her instructions are thorough,
clear, concise, and easy to follow. Being
a complete novice, I so appreciated the
steady, yet relaxed way she presented
the various methods for adding beads
to dress up any project.

To The Rescue!

On one corner of my studio worktable, I have,
a collection...well, really it has become an
obsession, of neatly stacked vintage orphan
quilt blocks.

For those of you that don't sew, orphan quilt
blocks are fabric pieces that are left over from
a project, often one or two blocks that did not
make it into a quilting project for some reason.

I absolutely adore rescuing an orphan made of
beautiful time worn fabrics, arranged into a
particular quilt pattern with interesting details.

Here is a particular orphan that really did not
excite me at first glance...

but I have learned to look at both the front and
back sides of these blocks. And when I turned
this one over, my heart completely skipped
a beat.

Look at the very cool star in the center!

I so enjoy taking each block found and giving
it a second life by creating a unique work of
art with the orphan as my colorful background.

Such heartwarming little pieces created that
could be framed or stitched to even larger works.

I am excited to be sharing this love of vintage
and quilting in a new workshop at International
Quilt Houston - Orphan Quilt Block Surprise,
on Wednesday, November 2nd

Flea Market Inspirations

This past weekend was the beginning of
Flea Market Season. Each month from
September of the current year through
June of the following year, there is a
large flea market that happens, dealers
from all over Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska,
and Missouri come to sell their wares.

Attending is always an adventure and
somewhat of a treasure hunt for bits
and baubles I sometime never knew I
needed. This trip was all about finding
the perfect picture frames, smallish in
size, very weathered or a nice aged patina.

I came home with some gems that I can't
wait to fill with artworks for my home, like
this charming work, or perhaps to sell.

I love these purchases because of the
variation of sizes, shapes and colors.

This particular frame is a little bigger than
the others, but I completely swooned over
it the moment I saw the seller unwrapping
the piece. It has the most lush dark stain
with incredible acorn details. I can envision
in my mind's eye a running hare painted
against a starry sky background... so stay tuned!

Floating, drifting with all limbs outstretched as far as
each can reach, the butterflies, the moths dance...
spinning and twirling around keeping perfect time
in the carefully choreographed Autumn waltz,
stopping only to visit the freshly planted mums

Harvesting the last of garden flowers, tho a bit
ragged on the edges, their beauty still shines radiant
through the decay.

For me, lately, it has been all about the Sunflower.
Beautiful, bright rays of sunshine all packed into
this big flower. How can you not smile when you
gaze upon such a bouquet?

I love, Love, LOVE to decorate with fresh flowers
in my home. And in the Autumn months I am
always gravitating to the Sunflowers.

I hope to procure some Sunflower seeds, the ones
that produce the REALLY BIG heads, to plant
in the garden next year.

The scorching heat has returned to the Plains, relentless
and unforgiving. At certain moments, all five feeders
have been filled to the brim with winged visitors, each
vying for food and shelter from what seems like the
wrath of the elements.

I have been amazed by the number of Orioles, of late,
and even the first appearance of a female Cardinal.

It has been a jam packed few weeks here in the studio.

First starting with the arrival of my NEW! 2012

oh, be still my beating heart.

Next a flurry of packing, shipping, and celebrating
with friends via the web... keeping me all a flutter
with anticipation as my calendar treasures begin to
arrive at their destinations.

I LOVED reading all the different responses
given for the favorite seasons question.

Fall and Spring were the clear winners with Summer
taking third place, followed by All Seasons, and Winter
was last. My favorite is Autumn followed by Winter.

Twelve Months Inspired

Near the Forest Edge

of discovery... whether it is a something you
find in nature or perhaps something you realize
about yourself.

Tomorrow begins a new month and there are small
changes occurring here upon the Plains, as one
season begins to slowly fade.

Remembering...

The days here, upon the Plains, are so quiet with an
eerie stillness, not even the slightest whispers can be
heard outside, as the unbearable sweltering heat has
all creatures seeking shelter, trying desperately to
conserve every ounce of bodily energy. Even visits
to the bird feeders are so few, and I sorely miss my
winged friends. My hope is for this weather to break,
but alas, there is for now, no end in sight.

Several weeks before the Summer had unleashed this
seasonal fury, I was enjoying the comings and goings
of fledging birds gathering to feed alongside their parents.

These family moments were such a delight to watch
with mom and dad working to be good examples,
and babies not quite catching on. You could always
tell which were the little ones, as they would normally
sit on the porch railing near the feeder, fluttering their
wings about, calling for someone to come bring them
something to eat. Like all good parents, mom or dad
were always obliging.

The Guest House

Over the long holiday weekend, hubby and I were, once
again, busy busy with lots of household chores. One of
those to-dos involved attaching a new guest cottage in
a suitable place to one of our deck posts.

Now, I realize it is, most likely, much to late to have
any visitors this year, but I dream of next Spring when
some bird family might decide this little abode is perfect!

This new cottage also inspired a bit of creativity to share...

In The Studio - The Dog Days of Summer

The 100+ temperatures are a daily reminder of Summertime
upon the Plains. Even the hardiest folks tend to hibernate
during the day with window shades drawn and air conditioners
roaring.

I, too, have sought shelter from the blistering heat by spending
these hours tucked away in my cheery basement studio, creating
a bit of magic with paint and canvas, working diligently to meet
several project deadlines.

Pulse is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new
artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow
you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented
crew of individuals. More than 130 artists have answered a series
of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be
presented in a series of online posts.

Show and Tell

Remember kindergarten, and Show and Tell. So in
my previous post, I mentioned that I collected some
incredible treasures left behind on the rocky
shore. Here is a glimpse of my gatherings.

A humorous side story...the very first day I was beach
combing, I lost my balance trying to maneuver myself
toward the water's edge... luckily, I landed on a giant
pile of soft slimy seaweed. Although wet and muddy
over my entire backside, I was pretty grateful to have
such a nice squishy cushion to break the fall which
might otherwise have been on sharp rocks.

Up to the last day, I had only collected a small hand
full of precious sea glass. But during the last hours
of my beach combing, I discovered a very small island
revealed during low tide and located in a deep inlet
close to our cottage. This proved to be a sea glass
lover's paradise. I filled my entire sand pail with gem
after gem of colorful glass shards, as well as pottery.
Each piece smoothed of its rough edges and frosted.

These small shells shown in the images above are my
absolute favorite. The coast was litter with thousands
of them, but I was particularly drawn to the ones that
were almost entirely white or streaked with a plethora
of colors.

I was also very lucky to find some rather large shells
most of them buried in the sandy silt. A few were
as big as my hand and one was still intact with its
matching half.

My moments searching the beach were both therapeutic
and fruitful. It was relaxing to observe the sea with its
ever changing yet constant routine. And the thrill of
each new discover never grew old, as my heart leapt
with joy and gratitude.

This past week was all about living each moment, basking
in the beauty of the Maine coast, and feeling very connected
to the earth, to life. The experience has left me feeling renewed
and energized, filled with such joy and bubbling over with creativity.
I just could not wait to share some of the inspiration I found during
my trip.

Each day was full of beach combing adventures, where I
gathered some of the most incredible treasures left behind
during low tide by the majestic waves. Other moments included
a carriage ride through Acadia National Park accompanied by
afternoon tea and pastries, as well as random moments of
collecting wildflowers to tuck into my flower press and
journaling my thoughts almost every sunrise at 4 am.

"This Life is fleeting, be in the here, the now, live each moment."

Returning as an Honored Guest

is the brain child of artist extraordinaire, Jenny Doh.
She has thoughtfully created a place where artists,
like herself, can share our success stories and give
each other hope.

Stopping to Smell the Roses...

Sometimes life throws some pretty unexpected moments at you.
This last week was filled to the brim with real extremes, both good
and bad.

At the beginning of the week, I received some incredible news, I had
been accepted to teach another year at Artfest, which had me feeling
so thrilled to again be a part of such an incredible event. Then came
more great news, that I will be working with my wonderful calendar
company, TF Publishing, on designs for a 2013 Nature Inspired Birds
line, as well as the possibility of another exciting opportunity.

But joys quickly turned to sorrow on Tuesday when I received word
that my grandmother had passed away and the cost of a plane ticket
was way out of my budget, making it impossible for me to attend the
funeral. And on Thursday, my town experienced some very severe
weather, causing quite a bit of storm damage to our home. Then late
Friday night/early Saturday morning found me in the emergency room
terribly dehydrated and unable to stop vomiting due to a very nasty
stomach virus.

So today, I am taking it a little easy, and working to regain my strength,
stopping to smell the roses and be thankful!

Foxglove LOVE!

I am back in the studio after a LONG holiday week.
It feels good to have my paints out and to be creating.

The lavender foxglove are full bloom in the garden right
now, which has me excited to immortalize such beauty
through several new artworks.

Here and Now

This past week has been all about life
outside the studio. Mostly doing house-
hold projects that have desperately needed
attention, but also spending lots and lots
of time in the garden.

Lately, there have been a few completely
perfect weather days, which is quite rare
here on the Plains, so I have been taking
advantage of this golden opportunity to
toil away in the dirt, planting, pruning,
also filling the creative well by soaking up
moments of nature inspiration.

I will be enjoying more of the outdoors
over the long holiday weekend, as I hope
you will too...Happy Memorial Day!

An Artful Card Tutorial

It is that time again... my family has a
plethora of birthdays and anniversaries
over the summer months. I have been
working on some artful sentiments
to send.

I invite you to create along with me,
as I demonstrate how to make your
own delicate hand-painted, butterfly
collage art card.

1. Using a copyright free image or photograph
of a butterfly, transfer the image to a piece
of typing/copy paper via your computer
and printer or a copier.

2. Cut a small piece of 200-thread count
bleach muslin fabric slightly larger than
the butterfly, and lay the fabric over the
image.

3. Using a mechanical pencil, trace the
outline of the butterfly onto the fabric.

4. Be sure to capture any important
details shown, such as the body or
large wing markings.

5. Using your favorite acrylic paints,
select colors that match the butterfly
image. Apply paint to the fabric,
remembering to wash your brush
thoroughly when changing to a new
color.

6. Once you finish painting your image,
take a pair of sharp, small scissors and
carefully cut the butterfly out.

7. Be sure to trim close enough to
remove all traces of the unpainted
bleached muslin fabric around the
outside of the wings and body.

8. Now gather a blank greeting card,
envelope, and miscellaneous collage
materials such as vintage papers,
lace, other fabrics.

9. Arrange the various collage materials
and attach to the front of the blank
greeting card using paste or double
stick tape.

10. Stitch your painted butterfly to
the collaged greeting card using
a needle and thread. One or two
stitches is enough to hold the

View from a Sketchbook - Into the Wilds

Spring, upon the Plains, has been
unseasonably cold, with Winter
vehemently desperate to keep hold of
each passing day. Frequent bouts of
freezing temperatures have had these
landscapes struggling to burst forth
with their usual blooms and foliage.

The garden is just now starting to reveal
a few of its lovely treasures.

The first to appear has been a briar of
roses located in the sunniest spot. In
fact, these roses are already a somewhat
tangled thicket, full of petite blossoms.

While trimming back the wilds of the
unruly bramble, I could not help but gather
a small bouquet for myself. Just a little bit
of the outside to decorate the desk in my
window-less studio.

The inspiration found in trying to tame these
garden beauties has also become the jumping
off point for the first pages in my 2012
Sketchbook Project Journal.

Just an update: My beautiful Blue Jay has
SOLD!!! VERY EXCITING...On the first day
of the auction have already raised over $1000.00.
A number of really wonderful pieces still for sale,

than asking each person to outbid the last
bidder, which is what happens in traditional
auctions, a reverse auction invites patrons to
purchase one-of-a-kind art right now.

The devastation that the people of Japan
have experienced as a result of the recent
earthquake and Tsunami is unimaginable.
In the face of such tragedy, the best of
humanity comes forth with efforts to find
unique ways to help. I am so honored and
proud to be a contributing artist in this effort
to raise awareness and aid. All proceeds will
be donated to the American Red Cross.

The artwork shown above is an original piece
that is very dear to me, as Blue Jays are one of

Looking Back

I am sure you have been there...
desperately looking for some missing
something, sort of remembering where
it might be located, only to discover it
is not.

So you continue to look, and look and
look some more... shuffling through
various boxes, nooks, bins, other dark
recesses. Yet during this mad hunt, you
run across long ago items that completely
sidetrack the task at hand and start you
reminiscing!

I thought it might be fun to carry you down
memory lane with me. Each sketch is at
least ten years old. All of them rendered
during my days in art school. I love the
variety of styles. This was definitely a
period of exploration and finding my
artistic voice.

In The Studio - UPDATES

Already, we are almost at
the end of April. However,
I am excited to celebrate
this upcoming month,
brimming with wonderful
holidays to come, such as
May Day, Mother's Day,
and Memorial Day.

I am spending lots of time
in the studio over the
coming weeks wrapping up
some exciting licensing
projects and beginning
other new adventures.

Just in time for Mother's Day, I am happy to
announce the addition of several new items
in my little shop.

Over the years, the opportunities to offer
original works of art have become less and
less due to the need to hold on to pieces for
various projects. So, I am extremely thrilled

Heavy Hearted

It is with a heavy heart I share this news,
that the sweet baby birds are gone today.

Unfortunately I fear the worst as one of the
fledglings was found dead.

I know this is a part of life and nature, but it
does not make the discovery any less sad,
painful, and very heartbreaking. My husband
will help me bury the little one tonight.

I am a complete puddle of tears. All I can
think to do is to hide away in my studio and
paint to help preserve those wonderful moments.
I am ever so grateful for the brief time I had with
these miracles!

A last remembrance and goodbye.

UPDATE 4/21: We buried the remains of the little one
last night at dusk, near the grave of the Indigo Bunting (see
post, here).

Initially, I removed the nest but decided to put it back in the
wreath. I don't know if there will be another visitor this year?
If not, then perhaps next year we will be blessed with more
miracles. However, hubby and I have formulated some ideas
to thwart off predators for the next time.... hopefully, giving
the little ones a better chance.

I have asked my dear friend, Katherine Dunn, to create a special
stone to mark their resting place. Katherine has a wonderful
post about this topic that is currently up on her blog.

Babies and More Babies!

Just an update... before I left on my recent travels,
there were seven little eggs nestled in the nest on
the front door wreath. (Although as seen in the
picture above, I was only able to get a picture of five)

Mama was diligently sitting on them almost every
minute, and I was hoping the eggs would not hatch
until I returned.

Well... I got my wish! Little ones began to appear
one day after I arrived home, perfect timing.

Mama and Papa bird are now busy, busy trying
to keep mouths fed, and I am enjoying catching
brief glimpses of the fledglings between their
feedings.

capture so far.
