Journaling The Garden Week 8

This week, I painted the background for my next
journal spread. With Winter quickly coming to a
close, these remnant days have manifested a strong
desire within to create just a few more pages as a
final ode to this fleeting season.

Ever since visiting the hardware store and collecting
samples of Venetian Plaster, I have been anxious
to try this decorative technique.

Unfortunately, it quickly became clear upon arriving
in the paint department that this was something I
was not going to be able to do for minimal cost,
because the plaster is only available by the gallon
at almost $50 a can...ouch!

Instead, I decided to go a slightly different direction,
still hoping to achieve the Venetian Plaster look using
a different product. So, I purchased a small jar of
Liquitex Ceramic Stucco Texture Gel. (found at
my local Hobby Craft Store)

I applied a base coat of the Stucco with a spatula
using overlapping crisscross strokes.

Also making additional marks in the wet Stucco
with the spatula held at different angles.

Once the base coat was partially dry, next
mixed medium blue acrylic paint into the
Stucco and repeating previous strokes made
with the spatula.

To create more dimension within the back-
ground, added a darker blue to the medium
blue Stucco mixture.

Finally applying the darker Stucco sporadically
to give the atmosphere a greater sense of depth

I love this - and all the more beautiful for utilising an inexpensive product. Are you using it on a stiff substrate? Or is it OK on fabric, or something else flexible?

Ann.. I am not sure how it will hold up on fabric. However I am using this on a journal page. I actually did a practice page before going to my journal and the dried stucco made the paper a little more stiff, and I did not have any problems with it coming off this substrate once dry.

I love this! It looks like the sky during a storm. I don't know if spring has arrived or not. The croci are blooming and the daffs are about a week away. We have had days near 60, but snow is predicted next week. Spring time in the West! Wishing you a beautiful weekend.
